Craving something rich and sweet — but still want to feel good after eating it? Try this Chocolate Black Bean Slice — indulgent, nourishing, and secretly packed with fibre and protein to support your gut and your blood sugar.

Makes 12 squares

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (400g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup wholemeal flour

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a small baking tin with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mash black beans thoroughly with a fork or potato masher until smooth.
  3. Stir in apple sauce, maple syrup, and vanilla extract, mixing well.
  4. Add cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and wholemeal flour. Stir until fully combined.
  5. Spread mixture evenly into the lined tin and bake for 20–25 minutes until the edges are set but the centre is slightly soft.
  6. Let cool completely before slicing.
